Designed by Julia Morgan, the first woman architect in California, best-known for the Hearst Castle. Built in 1918, it is of the classic batten and board design. The eaves are wide and sheltering, and the pitch of the roof has a gentle rise. The general impression is of a low and wide building anchored firmly to the earth. It is unobtrusive and simple in line, being designed as a comfortable and functional clubhouse, a home for single young working women. It was also intended as a community center for dances, classes, swimming (the pool has since been filled in) and as a hospitality house for service personnel.
The Morgan House is the City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 186.
